About the Panel Discussion
The panel discussion on “India’s Engagement with International Criminal Justice” provides students, research scholars and legal professionals with a platform to critically examine emerging issues in global justice mechanisms. The discussion seeks to go beyond a descriptive account of international laws and engage with the chosen theme through critical analysis, evidence-based frameworks and well-reasoned legal parameters.
The discussion will be structured around a central question: How can India engage with international criminal justice in a manner that is principled, evidence-based, constitutionally sound and sensitive to diplomatic realities?
Themes and Structure of the Discussion
The panel will move systematically across the following core areas:

I. PROF. SRINIVAS BURRA
India’s approach to international criminal justice: legal foundations, global politics and the Global South perspective. Offer reflections on what a principled Indian approach could look like: one that protects sovereignty and due process while refusing impunity for the gravest international crimes.
II. ROHIT GUPTA
High seas law, piracy and India’s domestic capacity to address international crimes
Possible discussion points. Identify practical reforms India could consider, such as standing procedures for police and immigration authorities, specialised capacity for international-crimes investigations, mutual legal assistance and transparent criteria for prosecutorial decisions.

III. AAKASH CHANDRAN
Victims, complementarity and regional pathways to accountability in Asia
Possible discussion points. Consider future legal developments, particularly a possible Crimes Against Humanity Convention, and what such a framework could mean for prevention, inter-state cooperation, domestic legislation and accountability in Asia.
