The National Law University Odisha (NLUO) is a vibrant addition to India’s national law universities. Within the short span, NLUO has made its mark as a university engaged in teaching and research in law.The University has received recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 12(b) of the UGC Act 1956, and has been receiving grants under the XIIth Plan. Its degrees offered are recognised by the Bar Council of India. It is also an associate member of the UGC-INFLIBNET, and a participant in the National Knowledge Network under the Ministry of Information Technology and Communication, Government of India.

About IDG

Informal Discussion Group is a student-run society in National Law University Odisha that aims to organize guest lectures by inviting people who have done exemplary work in their respective fields with an intent to motivate and guide law students and provide them a multi-dimensional understanding of a variety of subjects. In pursuance of this, the Informal Discussion group, provide them a platform where they are exposed to different perspectives of the guests.

About the event

The Group is organizing its 26th Guest Lecture, a panel discussion with eminent personalities comprising Dr. Bittu Kaveri Rajaraman, Grace Banu, and Japleen Pasricha.

Theme of the Lecture

Understanding Sex and Gender: An Inclusive and Intersectional Perspective.

Sub-Themes

  • Working towards inclusivity in modern day feminism.
  • Understanding intersectional feminism with special emphasis on rural India
  • Impact of laws and public institutions in everyday life of transgenders
  • Perception of radical feminist regarding recognition of transwomen as woman in the modern times.
  • COVID related challenges amongst females and transgenders

The Panelists

Dr. Bittu Kaveri Rajaraman

Prior to joining Ashoka University, Dr. Kaveri Rajaraman Indira was an INSPIRE-faculty at the Central University of Hyderabad. Professor Bittu had received a Ph.D. from Harvard University in neuroscience. A queer activist and a neuroscientist, Professor Bittu has been a tireless advocate for the Dalit and LGBTQ community and has written in-depth about issues close to him. He is a genderqueer transman who believes in the annihilation of caste, class, and gender. He is someone who has been involved in creating a safe space for marginalized people ever since he was in college.

Grace Banu

Grace Banu is a Dalit and transgender activist. She was the first transgender person to be admitted to an engineering college in Tamil Nadu. She is the founder and director of the TransRightsNow Collective. She is currently raising funds for the trans community, which has been badly affected by the pandemic induced lockdown.

Japleen Pasricha

Japleen is the founder & editor-in-chief of Feminism in India, an award-winning digital platform for feminist media. She is a writer, educator, campaigner, and a researcher. She has vast experience in digital media and online publishing. She is also a TEDx speaker and a UN World Summit Young Innovator.
