The Gujarat National Law University Centre for Sports and Entertainment Law (GCSEL) works in Entertainment and Sports Law undertaking various capacity-building programs, courses, and research activities.

About the Competition

To mark a hundred years of Dev Anand or as he is called, ‘Dev Sahab’ and his impact on the cinema of India, they are organizing the Dev Anand Essay Writing Competition under the aegis of the GNLU Centre for Sports and Entertainment Law.

Dev Anand was an icon of Bollywood and he lives on, forever young, in our hearts and memories, through his versatile movies, their music, and the accounts of the numerous stars who credit their careers to his mentorship. This competition is organized with the intention of honoring this vast legacy by fostering discussion and research into a wide range of topics that are relevant to entertainment law and the media industry of today. 

Eligibility

This competition is open to students pursuing their legal degrees (undergraduate/postgraduate) or any other such course equivalent, from all recognized universities across the world.

Theme

The listed themes are broad themes and not titles.

  1. Where can I watch that? Piracy in the Age of Streaming
  2. Libraries, Book Piracy, Internet Archive: Access to Information 
  3. Union Strong: The rights of artists working in the Entertainment industry
  4. Regulating Fandom and Creator Fan Interactions
  5. Publicity Rights of Influencers
  6. Entertainment and Democracy: Censorship and Chilling Effects in Media
  7. Defamation on Social Media
  8. Luxury Law: Taxation, CSR, and Marketing in the Fashion Industry
  9. Political Clothing: Fashion and Fundamental Freedoms
  10. Popstars and Plagiarism Accusations
  11. Who Owns My Work? Musicians and Masters
  12. Groceries to Movies: Conglomerates in Media Industries

Note: The participants are encouraged, but not restricted to the abovementioned themes. They can select a theme of their own choice, and prepare an essay on the basis of that too.

Formatting Guidelines

  • For Body:
    • Font: Times New Roman
    • Font Size: 12
    • Spacing: 1.5
    • Alignment: Justified
    • Margin: One inch on all sides
    • Paper Size: A4
  • For Footnotes:
    • Font: Times New Roman
    • Font Size: 10
    • Spacing: 1
    • Alignment: Justified
    • Citation Style: OSCOLA (Oxford University Standard for Citation of Legal
    • Authorities) style
  • Note: Speaking footnotes are prohibited, and shall lead to the deduction of marks.

Submission Guidelines

  • The word limit for the essays is 3000-3500 words, exclusive of footnotes. Essays exceeding this word limit, shall not be considered.
  • Co-authorship of up to 2 authors is permitted.
  • Participants can submit only one entry.
  • The essay must be submitted in Microsoft Word Document format (.doc/.docx) only.
  • The essay must be submitted through email to [email protected]  with the subject
    ‘Submission for GNLU Essay Competition on Entertainment Law’.
  • The participants must refrain from including their names or any information hinting to
    their identity. The essay must not disclose the identity of the participant(s) in any way,
    failing which, the entry shall be disqualified. All the information about the authors
    should be included in the email, separate from the essay. The information required is:
    • Full name of the Participant(s)
    • Name and address of the participant’s University(/Universities)
    • Current year of study and name of degree being pursued
    • E-mail ID(s) of the participant(s)
    • Theme Chosen
  • It is the responsibility of the participant(s) to ensure that the content of the essays is original. A strict online plagiarism as well and AI check will be done on all the submissions. No form of plagiarism or AI-generated content will be accepted, and any such detection shall result in immediate disqualification of the entry.
  • No part of the essay should have been published earlier, nor should it be under consideration for publication elsewhere.
  • There is no participation fee.

Prizes

  • First Prize: Rs. 10,000 with a certificate
  • Second Prize: Rs. 7,000 with a certificate
  • Third Prize: Rs. 4,000 with a certificate
  • In addition to this, if the Editorial Board recommends, the essays shall be modified after due communication with the authors for publication on the GCSEL Blog.

Important Dates

  • Last Date for submission: 21st December, 2023
  • Declaration of Results: January 2024
