National Seminar on Nasha Mukt Samaj Andolan Abhiyan Kaushal Ka: Socio-Legal, Psychological and other Ways for the Prevention of Alcohol and Drug Addiction in India Organized By Central University of Punjab, Bathinda In collaboration with Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India.
Alcohol and Drug abuse have been common evils in almost all societies in the world since time immemorial. These evils have arisen out of either therapeutic or hedonistic considerations or as a means of relaxation from the stresses and strains of the day-to-day life.
The fast changing social milieu is mainly contributing to the proliferation of alcohol and drug abuse among many other factors. The complex interaction between alcohol and drugs, the individual and the setting in which the drug abuse taken has resulted in several social, economic and health related problems which sometimes end in tragic deaths.
Millions of alcohol and drug addicts all over the world are leading miserable lives. India too is caught in this vicious circle of alcohol and drug abuse. The substantial increase in the number of the addicts day by day has become a matter of grave concern.
The hazard of the menace of alcohol and drug abuse needs to be checked, as the cost to the people, environment and nations economy are monumental. Moreover, the spread of such reprehensible habits among the relatively young segment of society ought to be arrested at all cost.
The time has come for government enforcement agencies, the non-governmental philanthropic agencies, educational institutions and others to collaborate and supplement each other to find a solution for the problem of alcohol and drug addiction.
Through education, awareness, medical actions, legal actions and engaging them in physical education and sports, we could mitigate the burden of addiction. All stakeholders should come forward with the best possible and feasible plans. The role of prominent persons with individual/collective efforts through awareness campaigns may lead to the solution.
The menace of alcohol and drug abuse has consistently been addressed in the sphere of academics as well. The problem has been the subject of considerable research. Impressionistic article, Journalistic accounts and scientific papers and reports have been published consistently.
The proposed national seminar will focus on nature, extent, types, causes, impact and psychosocial management of drug addicts/characteristics of the drug users.
