About the Conference
This One-Day National Conference critically examines India’s evolving legal, regulatory, and policy framework concerning rare diseases and orphan drug development. Despite the significant burden of rare diseases, pharmaceutical research continues to favour commercially viable, high-volume markets, creating persistent challenges in innovation, affordability, and equitable access to essential medicines.

Adopting a Public Choice Theory perspective, the conference explores how political incentives, regulatory interests, rent-seeking behaviour, and policy market failures shape healthcare legislation and pharmaceutical incentives. It further analyses the complex interplay between governmental decision-making, regulatory frameworks, pharmaceutical interests, and public health priorities.
By bringing together perspectives from law, economics, healthcare, and public policy, the conference seeks to foster critical interdisciplinary dialogue on the structural barriers and emerging opportunities in orphan drug development. The forum ultimately aims to advance informed policy discourse and contribute to a more equitable, innovation-driven, and patient-centric approach to rare disease governance in India.
