About Prin. Y. P. Phanse

Principal Y. P. Phanse was a distinguished legal academic and administrator who served as the Principal of New Law College, Mumbai (under the Modern Education Society) from 1994 to 1999.

Academic Background: He held degrees in Arts and Law (B.A., LL.M.).

Association with New Law College: Prior to taking on the role of Principal, Prof. Phanse contributed to the institution for many years as a full-time Professor of Law and served as the Vice-Principal during the tenure of former Principal Dr. P. W. Rege.

Leadership: During his period as Principal (1994–1999), he played a central role in guiding the college’s academic standards, maintaining its reputation as one of the premier private legal education institutions affiliated with the University of Mumbai.

Objective of the Online Essay Competition:

The objective of the Research based Essay Writing Competition is to encourage participants to combine research-oriented, evidence-based analysis inclusive of their opinion on contemporary issues concerning women.

The competition aims to cultivate critical thinking, independent research, and effective written communication while inspiring meaningful engagement with issues of equality, justice, and social change.

By being conducted in an online mode, the competition provides participants with the flexibility to undertake comprehensive research, access diverse and credible sources, and produce well-informed and original essays.

Eligibility

The competition is open to students pursuing any undergraduate (Law 3 years / 5 years / any other degree course) programme in a college or institution recognized by a university in India.

There is no restriction on the number of participants from any eligible institution.

Interested participants are required to register individually by completing the registration form and paying the prescribed registration fee.

Essay Topics

  • Need for reformation in personal laws for woman equality.
  • Punished for Speaking Up: The Social and Psychological Burden on Women Reporting Crimes.
  • Constitutional Morality vs. Religious Practices: Women’s Autonomy in India
  • Intersectionality in Leadership: Understanding the Unequal Treatment of Women Leaders.
  • Mental Health and Women: A Matter of Rights, Dignity, and Care.

Prizes

  • 1st Prize: Rs. 2000/-
  • 2nd Prize: Rs. 1000/-

(Subject to the entries. Minimum 15 entries are required.)

E-Certificate of Participation shall be given to all the participants.

Formatting Guidelines

  • The title of the essay shall be followed by the participant’s Full Name, Year of Study, Name of the College/University, Email Address, and Contact Number (preferably WhatsApp).
  • Each participant shall submit only one essay on any one of the above-mentioned topics.
  • Co-authorship is not permitted.
  • Word Limit: 1,500–2,000 words (excluding footnotes and bibliography).
  • Line Spacing: Single-spaced.
  • Font: Times New Roman.
  • Font Size: 12 pt (Body Text).
  • Title: 14 pt, Bold, Centre Aligned.
  • Footnote (Citation Style): Bluebook.
  • Bibliography: A bibliography listing all books, journal articles, reports, statutes, cases, websites, and other resources referred to in the essay shall be included at the end of the submission.
  • Wherever appropriate, participants are encouraged to substantiate their arguments with relevant data, statistics, case studies, policy documents, judicial decisions, academic literature, reports, charts, graphs, tables, or other authentic sources to strengthen the quality of their analysis.

Originality & Integrity

The essay must be the original, unpublished work.

Essays must be non-plagiarized.

Use of AI tools for research assistance (e.g., background reading, structuring ideas) is permitted; however, the final essay must reflect the author’s own independent analysis and writing. Essays found to be substantially AI-generated will be disqualified. Decision of the Event Committee shall be final and binding on this.

The writing should be free of grammatical errors and overlapping/repetitive content.

There should be structural coherence; the introduction and conclusion of the essay should be proper, rational, and well-connected to the body.

Essays must refrain from defamatory statements, unverified allegations, or personal attacks against any individual, institution, or authority. The organizing committee reserves the right to disqualify any entry violating this rule.

Marking Criteria

  • Content of Essay – 20 Marks
  • Writing style (Language, knowledge, analysis) – 20 Marks
  • Research and Relevance (Logical, analytical approach) – 20 Marks
  • Organization and Flow – 20 Marks
  • Formatting Rules as prescribed – 20 Marks

(The marks for the Submissions shall not be disclosed.)

Submission Process

The essay must be e-mailed to [email protected] ONLY. Essays shall NOT be accepted in any other form (e.g., hard copy, WhatsApp, other email IDs, or physical submission).

File naming convention: Name_Institution_TopicNumber.docx (e.g., PriyaSharma_NLC_Topic3.docx).

Email subject line format: “Essay Submission – [Full Name] – [Topic No.]”

Submission after the deadline will not be considered.

Participants will receive an acknowledgment email within 48 hours of submission. If no acknowledgment is received, participants must contact to confirm receipt of their entry.
