About NISD

The National Institute of Social Defence (NISD) is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. As a nodal institution in the field of social defence, NISD undertakes training, research, and policy advocacy in areas such as the welfare of senior citizens, substance abuse prevention, and social rehabilitation, thereby contributing to the development of an inclusive and equitable society.

About the Seminar

The National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi, in collaboration with the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, is pleased to announce a Two-Day State Level Seminar on “Geriatric Jurisprudence: Fostering a Rights-Based Paradigm for Dignified Ageing.”

In the context of India’s ongoing demographic transition marked by a rapidly growing elderly population, the seminar seeks to foreground the legal dimensions of ageing through the lens of geriatric jurisprudence. Moving beyond a welfare-centric discourse, the seminar emphasises a rights-based paradigm rooted in constitutional values, aimed at safeguarding the dignity, autonomy, and well-being of senior citizens. It aspires to critically examine existing legal frameworks, identify systemic lacunae, and foster interdisciplinary dialogue for progressive legal and policy reform.
