About Barkatullah University
Barkatullah University formerly known as Bhopal University was established in the year 1970 in the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. In 1988 it was renamed as Barkatullah University, in honour of freedom fighter Prof. Barkatullah who belonged to Bhopal.
About M.E.R.U.
The Multidisciplinary Education and Research University (M.E.R.U.) scheme is a part of the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA) program, a government initiative to support higher education in India. The scheme aims to promote multidisciplinary approaches to education and research and provides grants to strengthen academic infrastructure, research facilities and academic programs in higher education institutions across India.

The Department of Legal Studies and Research at Barkatullah University, established in 1982, continues its commitment to providing high-quality legal education and remains a leading institution for legal research and education. About the Seminar
As we enter an era where artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming entwined with human rights, the Department of Legal Studies and Research is proud to host the seminar on Human Rights in the Era of Artificial Intelligence: Challenges, Opportunities and Way Ahead, scheduled to be held on 10th and 11th December, 2024. The seminar is being organized by the Department under the Multidisciplinary Education and Research University (M.E.R.U.) scheme. The seminar will serve as a platform to explore innovative approaches to addressing human rights challenges in the era of AI.

- Right to Privacy in the Age of AI and Personal Data Protection

- Impact of AI on Access to Social and Economic Rights (Education, Healthcare, Employment, etc.)
- AI and Criminal Justice System (Fair Trial, Due Process, Judicial Transparency, etc.)
- AI and Intellectual Property
- Comparative Legal Approaches to AI Regulation
- AI and the Future of Human Rights Protection
Note -The above-mentioned themes and sub-themes are not exhaustive but only illustrative. Authors are invited to explore and contribute to the discourse on any aspect of these sub-themes, aligning their work with the dynamic nature of AI and human rights.
Eligibility
This seminar is designed for a diverse audience, including legal professionals, research scholars, advocates, human rights activists and organizations, AI researchers, technical experts, and developers, policymakers, government officials, academicians, engineers, and students in fields such as law and technology.
Expected Outcomes
- Participants will gain insights into how AI affects human rights, recognizing both the potential benefits and challenges posed by it.
- The seminar will contribute to policy discussions on the regulation of AI technologies to safeguard human rights.
- The event will provide a platform for interdisciplinary networking and collaboration among legal scholars, academicians, technologists, human rights activists, and policymakers.
- The seminar will conclude with concrete recommendations for policymakers, industry leaders, and technologists on safeguarding and advancing human rights in the age of AI.
Submission Fees
There is no submission or presentation fee.
REWARDS: The top three papers in the seminar will be awarded.
PUBLICATION OPPORTUNITY: Selected papers will be published in a Book bearing ISBN.
Submission Guidelines
GUIDELINES FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION:
- All the abstracts must be in English.
- The abstract should not be more than 250 words and should be sent in Microsoft Word format (.doc/.docx). Abstracts will be reviewed before they are accepted.
- Authorship: Co-authorship of up to Two Authors is permitted.
- Submission of the Cover Letter: A cover letter should be submitted with the manuscript specifying the details of the Author/Authors. It should mention the Name of the Author/Authors, Designation, Institution/ Affiliation, the Title of the paper and Contact Information (email, phone, etc.)
- Submit your abstract and cover letter via Google Form Link Only.

Note: Authors are informed to initially submit the abstract only. After the notification of acceptance of the abstract, the authors will have to submit the final paper, as we have limited slots available for the presentation.
GUIDELINES FOR PAPER SUBMISSION:
- All the papers must be in English.
- The paper should be within the word limit of 3500-5000 words (Including abstract and footnotes).
- All the papers should be sent in Microsoft Word format (.doc/.docx).
- Submission of the Cover Letter: A cover letter should be submitted with the manuscript specifying the details of the Author/Authors. It should mention the Name of the Author/Authors, Designation, Institution/ Affiliation, the Title of the paper and Contact Information (email, phone, etc.)
- Submit your paper and cover letter via Google Form Link Only.
- A link to the Google Form for the submission of the paper will be shared after acceptance of the abstract.
Formatting:
- The paper shall be in Times New Roman, Font Size 12, 1.5 line spacing, justified text, and 1-inch margins on all sides of an A4 sheet.
- The Footnotes should be in Times New Roman, font size 10, and 1.0 single line spacing.
- Headings should follow the following standard:
- Title of the Submission: Upper-case, Bold, Font Size 14, center-aligned.
- Headings: Upper-case, Bold, Font Size 12, left-aligned.
- Sub-Headings: Title-Case, Bold, Font Size 12, left-aligned.
- Sub-Sub-Heading: Title-Case, Italics, Font Size 12, left-aligned, Italicized.
- Citation Format: Please use footnotes rather than endnotes. Footnotes should conform to Bluebook Citation Format (20th Edition).
- Plagiarism: Plagiarism shall not exceed more than 10%. The paper should not be plagiarized, and free from grammatical, spelling and other errors. If any plagiarism found more than 10%, the article shall be rejected.
- Originality of Manuscripts: All the contributions should be the original work of the contributors and should not have been submitted for consideration in any other Publication.
- AI-Generated Content: Submissions containing AI-generated content will not be considered and will be a ground for rejection.
- Copyright: Upon acceptance of your paper you hereby transfer, assign, and convey to the Organizers of the event i.e. Department of Legal Studies and Research, Barkatullah University, all copyright and ownership rights in and to the submitted content. This includes, but is not limited to, the right to reproduce, distribute, and display works based on the content.
GUIDELINES FOR PRESENTERS/RULES FOR THE PRESENTATION:
- No abstract or full paper shall be accepted after the last date of submission respectively.
- The paper presentation shall take place only offline.
- Identification Requirements: All the participants must bring one passport-size photograph and one ID proof that signifies their affiliation with their institution.
- Paper Presenters have to get registered offline after the acceptance of the abstract on 10th December 2024, 9 a.m. onwards.
- For presentations, offline registration is mandatory.
- Only registered participants will be allowed to take part in the Seminar.
- All the registered participants will be provided a presentation certificate only after successfully presenting the paper.
- T.A. /D.A. – No TA/DA, transportation and accommodation will be provided to the participant by the organizers.
