About GNLU Legal Services Committee
The GNLU Legal Services Committee (LSC) is the epicentre of legal aid and allied activities at Gujarat National Law University. Established under Section 4(k) of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, the Committee works towards empowering society through legal awareness and legal aid.
The LSC recognises law as an instrument of social change and undertakes a range of initiatives, including pro bono and legal aid clinics, research projects, legal awareness drives and its Prison Legal Aid Clinic.

About the Competition
The 1st GNLU LSC National Essay Competition on Legal Aid and Access to Justice seeks to encourage research, critical analysis and informed discourse on the legal and institutional mechanisms through which access to justice can be strengthened.
The competition will culminate in the declaration of results on 9 November 2026 — National Legal Services Day.
Eligibility
The competition is open to all undergraduate (UG) students across India.

Theme
Legal Aid and Access to Justice
Access to justice extends beyond the formal availability of courts and legal remedies. Economic hardship, social exclusion, lack of legal awareness, institutional barriers and unequal access to legal assistance can impede the effective exercise of rights.

- 1st Position — ₹8,000
- 2nd Position — ₹5,000
- 3rd Position — ₹3,000
In addition to the cash prizes, top performers will receive internship and publication opportunities.
All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation.
Internship Opportunities
As part of the opportunities associated with the competition, top performers may receive internship opportunities with organisations working across legal research, justice, public policy and foreign policy.
Formatting Guidelines
- Word Limit: 1300–1500 words
- File Format: Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx)
- Font: Times New Roman, 12-point
- Line Spacing: 1.5
- Alignment: Justified
- Margins: 1 inch on all sides
- Citations: Hyperlinks are mandatory for all citations and sources relied upon.
- Relevant cases, statutes, articles, reports and other sources must be appropriately hyperlinked within the text.
Selection Guidelines
Submissions should demonstrate:
- A clear argument
- Critical analysis
- Logical structure
- Engagement with relevant legal and contemporary developments
The essay must be original and unpublished and must not have been submitted elsewhere for publication or consideration.

The manuscript must also be anonymised and must not contain the author’s name, institutional affiliation, contact details or any other information revealing the author’s identity.

- The essay is submitted in Microsoft Word format.
