12th Convocation of National Law University Delhi

National Law University Delhi celebrated its 12th Convocation on the 6th of September 2025, marking another milestone in the institution’s journey towards excellence in legal education.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of Hon’ble Mrs. Justice BV Nagarathna (Judge, Supreme Court of India and Visitor, NLU Delhi), Hon’ble Mr. Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya (Chief Justice, Delhi High Court & Chancellor, NLU Delhi), Hon’ble Mr. Ashish Sood (Minister for Home, Education, Power, Urban Development, Higher Education, and Training & Technical Education in the Government of NCT of Delhi), Hon’ble Mr. Justice Om Prakash Shukla, Judge, High Court of Delhi, Hon’ble Mr. Justice V. Kameshwar Rao, Judge, Delhi High Court, Hon’ble Mr. Justice A.K. Sikri, International Judge of Singapore International Commercial Court and Former Judge Supreme Court of India, and Prof. B.B. Pande, Distinguished Professor of Law, NLU Delhi and Former Professor of Law, University of Delhi and Hon’ble Shri Dharmendra, Chief Secretary of Delhi.

The Convocation address was delivered by Hon’ble Mrs. Justice B.V. Nagarathna, in her address, she expressed her immense pride in addressing the graduating class of 2025. She congratulated the students for successfully completing one of the most rigorous legal education programs, highlighting their perseverance, intellectual rigor, and moral tenacity. She emphasized that their degree is not just a personal achievement but a call to serve society and uphold constitutional values. She urged the graduates to act as “Officers of the Court and Stewards of the Constitution,” reminding them that their role goes beyond litigation — it is about ensuring justice, equality, and access to legal remedies for all. She highlighted that in times of ambiguity, they must let their ethical compass guide their decisions, choosing integrity over expediency. Justice Nagarathna also underscored the evolving nature of law in the face of societal, technological, and environmental changes, encouraging graduates to be innovative, principled, and committed to public service. Finally, she exhorted them to use their knowledge and skills to build inclusive institutions and promote systemic equity, becoming true custodians of the rule of law.

Hon’ble Shri Ashish Sood, in his address, described the convocation as a milestone not only for the graduates but also for their families and teachers who shaped their journeys. He invoked the Upanishadic wisdom “Sā Vidyā Yā Vimuktaye” to stress that true education is that which liberates and transforms, urging students to look beyond degrees and embrace knowledge as a responsibility towards society. Highlighting the inseparability of Vidya (knowledge) and Dharma (duty), he reminded graduates that their education in law carries the responsibility of upholding justice and constitutional values. He also acknowledged the silent sacrifices of parents, calling them the true architects of their children’s success.

In his welcome address Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. G.S. Bajpai gave an account of the impressive academic achievements of students and faculty, the robust research ecosystem being developed in the University, expanded educational equity measures and internationalisation efforts that have ensured that NLU Delhi achieved Rank 2 in the Government of India’s NIRF rankings 2025 for the eighth consecutive year. Prof. Bajpai also highlighted NLU Delhi’s rapid rise as a leader in legal education through innovations like specialised programmes in Insolvency and Intellectual Property Law, and cutting-edge initiatives in AI and legal tech.

Hon’ble Mr. Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya (Chief Justice, Delhi High Court & Chancellor, NLU Delhi) conferred the degrees on 269 students from the Ph.D., LL.M., IP- Joint Master’s / LL.M. / M.A. and B.A.LL.B.(Hons.) programmes. In addition, 31 medals and 9 cash prizes were also presented to outstanding achievers. Mr. Pulkit Goyal and Mr. Dhaval Hemesh Sheth from the B.A.LL.B.(Hons.) received the the Best Student of the Year Award. Ms. Anisha Sharma (B.A.LL.B. Hons.) and Ms. Vibhuti Sharma (LL.M.) were awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Medals for Best Female Students in their respective programmes. Ms. Himanshi Raghuvanshi secured First Rank in the LL.M. Programme, while Ms. Sanchya Bansal secured First Rank in the LL.M.–JML Programme. Mr. Aman Saini (B.A.LL.B. Hons.) and Mr. Ankit Anand (LL.M.) were awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Medals for Best Male Students in their respective programmes.

On this distinguished occasion, Hon’ble Mr. Justice A.K. Sikri, International Judge of Singapore International Commercial Court and Former Judge Supreme Court of India, and Prof. B.B. Pande, Distinguished Professor of Law, NLU Delhi and Former Professor of Law, University of Delhi, were conferred the prestigious degree of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa), in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the legal field and academic excellence.
