Justice ML Pendse National Environmental Law Moot Court Competition 2023, organized by Maharashtra National Law University Successfully Concludes its First Edition

The first edition of the Justice ML Pendse National Environmental Law Moot Court Competition was successfully concluded on 26th February, 2023, after an intense three-day event. The valedictory ceremony was graced by the presence of Hon’ble Justice S.S. Shinde (Former Chief Justice, Rajasthan High Court), Hon’ble Justice S.K. Shinde (Former Judge, Bombay High Court), Dr Birendra Saraf, Advocate General, Maharashtra, and Senior Advocate, Bombay High Court, Mr. Nitin Thakker. The competition was organized by Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai (MNLU M), and the Justice M.L. Pendse Chair in Environmental Law, and saw participation from over 39 colleges from prestigious law colleges across the country.

The competition was held physically and saw participants from 24 qualifying teams arguing on complex legal issues related to environmental law. The final round was judged by a distinguished panel of judges, including legal luminaries like Hon’ble Justice S.S. Shinde (Former Chief Justice, Rajasthan High Court), Hon’ble Justice S.K. Shinde (Former Judge, Bombay High Court) and Justice Abhay Ahuja (Judge, Bombay High Court).

After two days of rigorous competition, the team from Symbiosis Law School, Noida emerged as the winners of the competition, with the team from Christ (Deemed to be University), Delhi NCR securing the runner-up position. The winning team was awarded a trophy, along with a cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000 (Rupees One Lakh). The runner-up team also received a cash prize of Rs. 60,000 (Rupees Sixty Thousand). Further, impressed by the performance of the runners-up, Dr Birendra Saraf, Advocate General, Maharashtra, generously awarded them an additional cash prize of Rs. 21,000 (Rupees Twenty-One Thousand).  The award for the best Memorial was bagged by Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab (Petitioner) and School of Law, Christ (Deemed to be University), Bengaluru. Further, Jasmine Mangat from RGNUL Punjab emerged as the best Speaker, and Satyam Agrawal from Lloyd Law College emerged as the best researcher.

The event was conducted under the guidance of Prof. (Dr) Dilip Ukey, Vice Chancellor, MNLU Mumbai; Senior Advocate, Bombay High Court, Mr. Nitin Thakker, and Prof. (Dr) Anil Variath, Registrar, MNLU Mumbai. Their dedication, leadership, and support have been instrumental in making this event a huge success. Further, the student Organizing Committee organized the event under the able leadership of faculty coordinators, Mr. Amana Khare, Ms. Manisha Khatyal and Ms. Mahvish Kazmi whose commitment to excellence inspired the student body.

The organizers were joined by glorious partners in the form of Bombay Incorporated Law Society (BILS)  as their Supporting Partners, SCC Online as their Knowledge Partners, LiveLaw as their Media Partners, Loopify as their gifting partners, and Eco-Roots Foundation as their Green Partners.

Speaking about the success of the event, Mr Amana Khare, the faculty coordinator of Moot Court Society, Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai said, “We are delighted with the overwhelming response that the Justice ML Pendse National Environmental Law Moot Court Competition received. The competition provided a platform for students to showcase their legal skills and understand the importance of environmental law in our society. We hope to continue organizing such events to promote environmental awareness and encourage young legal minds to participate in these important issues.”

The first edition of the Justice ML Pendse National Environmental Law Moot Court Competition was a resounding success, and it is hoped that such competitions will continue to encourage and inspire future generations of legal professionals to engage with critical environmental issues.
